It’s not the first time I’ve made cookies inspired by The Airborne Toxic Event. Their faces have been iced, the guitar pics sugar cookied and even Noah’s bass has been cut from dough. But this is something different. This is not only inspired by the drummer Daren Taylor, it was also inspired by one of their biggest fans.
In my introduction to “the club I shall not speak of” I met some pretty cool people. One rocked my eyes with her bad ass shirt. It read “I prefer the drummer.” Even before introductions, I thought that was the most freakin’ awesomest shirt on so many levels. The fact her picture shared lens time with Daren made it about perfect.
When she reached out and asked for a cookie set, I knew it would have to be drummer based. I couldn’t come at it with a repeat like something from before. It couldn’t be some boring two-dimensional regular cookie for the chick who owned that shirt. Hell no. She needed 3D! Yes, 3D cookies! I set out to make Daren’s drum set in the likes of his real kit. And here it is:
This was a cookie of discovery. I tried a new chocolate cookie recipe since his kit is brown. It was my first attempt at the 3D cookie. It may look like cookies stacked on top of each other, but it’s not. The insides are hollow. This gives them that drum feel with being lighter than you expect.
I also learned I suck at cymbals. What you can’t really see in the pictures is they sparkle. That’s the only thing that made them kinda cool. Plus the fact they stood up. That’s about where they end their similarity to Daren’s actual set. Also for you TATE diehards, there is another small detail where I took the easy way out. If you can guess it, put it in the comments.
Happily, this drum set found their home with Daren’s biggest fan. And of course, it wouldn’t have been complete without her infamous statement piped on a cookie. (I still love it!)
